Mott College Baseball: 'Impressive' freshmen push Bears to 2-2 start in spring training

Freshman pitching was a major factor during Mott College’s 2-2 stand against Division I JUCO power ASA College of Brooklyn on Thursday and Friday in Orlando.

Cory Zeiler capped his first collegiate appearance by going all seven innings during a 7-4 victory in Game 2 on Friday. The former Ida star struck out five batters and walked one. He was supported by two hits from sophomore Tyler Ramoie (Davison), three runs scored by freshman Nash Irwin (Mt. Morris) and three RBI from freshman Garik Godard (Windsor).

Chris Burgess also went the distance during his first collegiate appearance. The former Grand Blanc standout struck out four and scattered six hits during his 7-5 win in Game 1 on Friday. Freshman Jacob Armstrong (Clarkston) had three hits and four RBI, while freshman Tyler Dunklee (Montrose) contributed with a pair of timely singles.

Freshman pitcher James Castiglione had just five minutes to prepare for Game 1 of Thursday’s doubleheader with ASA College. With eight strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings, the former Fenton star certainly didn’t disappoint.

"He pitched lights out--very impressive," said first-year Bears coach Roger Christensen.

However, faulty relief pitching soured Castiglione's effort—not to mention Godard’s 4-for-4, two doubles from freshman Mike Rinke (Dryden) and three RBI from sophomore Mickey Montpas (Flushing)—as the Bears surrendered seven runs in the seventh inning before losing 12-11.

“We should have got the win, but our relief just kind of fell through—it was a very good learning experience. That kind of left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth,” said Christensen, whose Bears dropped Game 2, 18-5, in five innings.

Prior to Friday, ASA College was 8-1; it also qualified for the Division I NJCAA tournament in 2014.

The Bears are using Saturday to rest, relax and take in all that Orlando has to offer. They’ll spend time visiting ESPN’s Wide World of Sports and other Disney attractions with athletic coordinator Shawn Brown.

The Bears play a doubleheader at 2 pm Sunday with Gloucester CC (New Hampshire). They'll follow with games against Lincoln Land CC and Lincoln CC, both of Illinois, on Monday and Tuesday.
