SITM OHL: Saginaw Spirit falls to the Guelph Storm, 0-2 on the year

Guelph defeats Saginaw 5-1. Spirit start 0-2

As the second game of the Saginaw Spirit is in the books, the Spirit fall to 0-2 on the season after another rough night on the road -- but instead of against the Flint Firebirds, the troubles came against the Guelph Storm.

Much like the game against Flint, the Spirit allow two scores in the first period. Guelph's Matthew Hatchkiss scored the first goal with 7:26 into the first period, and Luke Burkhardt struck roughly a minute later, pushing Guelph to a 2-0 advantage heading into the second period.

The second period was a little more of the same with Saginaw allowing a score 1:51 into the period. However, Spirit forward Mike Davies finally dented the scoreboard, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

Guelph killed Saginaw's momentum by scoring once again late with five minutes remaining in the period, taking a three goal lead over the Spirit and leading 4-1 going into the second intermission.

The Storm scored once more midway through the third period.

The Spirit also failed to capitalize on four power-play opportunities, which is key for the young players who may not see a lot of time on the ice as Saginaw waits for their NHL prospects to return from their team camps.

Both teams were very aggressive with their shots-on-goal. Saginaw shot 36 times compared to Guelph's 39 shots. Saginaw’s Kris Bennett and Hayden Hodgson led the Spirit in shooting with five shots each.

The Spirit look to turn the season around as they host the Guelph Storm this Saturday for their home opener at 7:05pm.
